allmyfansquees:So as a Japanese speaker one of the things I’ve really enjoyed about the flood of MDZS content on my dash over the last several months is seeing where I can intuit the meaning from the Chinese and where I … really really can’t! In that vein it’s super interesting that the only two expressions here which are identical are ambition (wild heart) and enthusiasm (hot heart), (maybe sad too? though that’s - idk - more like heartsick, a deep emotional hurt, but then that could be the connotation in Chinese and it’s just been elided for space reasons) anyway, while there’s naturally a bunch which don’t exist, 小心, or little heart, means timid in JP, 細心 or fine heart is careful or meticulous, 放心, or put down a heart is like being in shock, vacant, completely out of it. (And while black heart isn’t a thing, ‘black-hearted’ people are usually called haraguro, or ‘black-stomached’ which I find kind of hilarious ^^;;)I love love LOVE seeing how both the Chinese and Japanese versions of the concepts make total sense, or how one might have arisen from the other, or evolved over time. I get to see that so much in English because I’m currently based in Europe and see (glimpses at least) of so many other European languages. But even when I was living in Japan I didn’t see much Chinese so I’m really enjoying by second- (third-?) hand exposure through tumblr -- source link
