cosmictuesdays:white-throated-packrat:roach-works:scumbag-stallion: Make no mistake, this will happen eventually. It’s not yet cost effective to replace all minimum wage work with automatic machines, but that does not mean it’ll never happen. You need only look at modern factory production to find mountains of examples of jobs bring replaced with robotics. However, this does not mean you should not fight for higher wages or worker’s rights. On the contrary, you should fight while you still have the leverage of being the only way they can make money. Get paid before you get replaced. hi! i work in a factory! i am a welder and the factory i work at has about eight welding robots! i can assure you that the robots are not our replacements. they’re not even our competition. they’re somewhere between ‘very useful tools’ and ‘very, very stupid coworkers’. automation does happen and workers’ rights must be fought for violently, i agree. but we absolutely need to start calling people’s bluff, as loudly as possible, when they say they can replace us uppity human beings with obedient metal slaves. robots are dumb as hell, really fucking expensive, delicate, high-maintenance, and also only useful for a couple things per machine per day, and this isn’t going to change for at least a decade. if your boss ever threatens you with a robot to get you to shut up, laugh him and his million-dollar paperweight out of the fucking room. When I worked in a production biotech lab, we had liquid handling robots to do some of the precise pipetting. They were very useful tools, but also VERY dumb. You had to load them in very precise ways, because they couldn’t spot a mistake at all, and would just do stuff like dump enough toxic chemicals right onto the floor that we had to call in a hazardous waste disposal company to deal with it. A human would have noticed that the chemicals were going all over the floor and halted production, but a robot is just going to do what a robot is programed to do.Currently, McDonald’s can’t keep the McFlurry machines functioning and sanitary. I doubt they’d be able to full automate any of their locations. #the robot apocalpyse isn’t going to happen because we love our mechanical children#even though they’re dumb [x] Excuse you, I’m perfect. -- source link
