Dear Mother and Father, Ysobel and Fiona, you remember Charles Delaroche I wrote to you about? You’d better! He proposed to me! We’re getting married this autumn. If we have Father’s consent of course, but Oncle Cézanne says he can’t imagine what anyone should possibly have against Charles. He’s half Scottish, as his mother’s family went to France with the Stuarts. I didn’t tell them I had a grudge against the Jacobites back in the day – I suppose I changed allegiance again. I’d dearly love to invite you all to the wedding, but I understand that someone has to stay with little Matthew. But perhaps at least Father and Mother can make the journey. It would mean a lot to me. You may hear from me in an unexpected way soon: I found a publisher for my volume of poetry! I sent it from France, claiming to have translated it from a French writer who was too modest to take credit. Apparently it’s quite all right for shy French ladies to write poetry about cows. I was in tears again reading about baby Matthew. Oncle Cézanne says I’m worse – or rather better – than the new waterworks in Versailles. I’m so glad Fergus left us a son, but what an awful lot of misfortunes to befall such a small child! Not wanting to be nosy, but could you be more precise about what he looks like? Father sounded like he was not fit to be seen, and Ysobel wrote he was quite endearing. Hoping to hear from you soon, Marianne -- source link
