as-if-and-only-if: each time you see a movie you descend into another ‘shell’ closer to the center of the earth. everything is the exact same except you’re deeper. the sky is artificial. above and below you are identical shells, full of identical things. geometry is bent by massive amounts of energy to keep the inner shells from being smaller than the outer ones. you would never know the difference without equipment you can’t afford.nobody knows how many shell worlds are nested inside of each other. nobody knows why, either. only people who were born before there were movies can be sure they were ever on the real, outermost surface of the earth. most of them never knew what the true purpose of movies were (to move us deeper into the shells), and unwittingly sentenced themselves and their descendants to life within the shells. but the few that did know never so much as set foot in a movie theater. And since we’re on the inside and they’re not, they can’t tell us why. (Their doubles in here aren’t perfect copies, either: in fact, they now seem too eager to watch movies.)but now people are waking up. and they’re fighting to bring us back—to the real surface, and to whatever they’re hiding from us. Shell Zero. Now, with special homegrown tech, people are making their own movies. low-budget, small-cast indie movies, but movies nonetheless. you might have to sit through three hours of unedited brooding and intermittent audio desync, but eventually, you’ll reach a reward sweeter than the prize this didn’t win at Sundance. you see…when these movies end…the credits scroll down the screen… -- source link
