rivendelles:Literature Meme - {1/3 Movements} RomanticismOriginating in Europe in the 18th Century, Romanticism was an artistic, literary and intellectual movement. In part a reaction to the Industrial Revolution, it was also a revolt against the political and social norms of the Age of Enlightenment. Socially, Europe was going through some of the most rapid changes in history; urbanization was thriving and France was coming out of the French Revolution and into the Napoleonic Wars.Romantic literature emphasised a love of nature and the “natural” man, idealising country life due to the belief that the flaws of society are the result of urbanization. The Medieval past, the supernatural, the mystical and the “gothic” were all themes that interested Romantic writers. It placed importance on the rights of the individual, revolution and rebellion, and freedom from oppression. Examples of this would be The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Les Misérables, and Frankenstein. All three works show man’s inhumanity to man by showing the treatment of outcasts/oppressed, a physically disabled man, an ex-convict and a manmade monster. Romantic poets had a strong connection to medievalism and mythology, such as The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson and Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner. (x) (x) (x) -- source link
