The FBI offered them a deal in exchange for their testimony. They’d never practice law again and their new identities would cut them off from everyone they knew in their old lives. It was bad luck really that the US Marshall in charge of their witness protection was crooked. He sabotaged all their attempts to get decent work until they had to fall back on stripping at his cousin’s club.
