nubbsgalore: the båstnäs car graveyard in värmland, sweden is home to hundreds of old cars now enveloped by shrouds of brambles and covered in moss. seeds take root in ripped upholstery, and plants and trees grow out of windows. the wrecked vehicles often act as greenhouses for the plants, making them grow faster and bigger than in nature. but the cars have been reborn as habitats for all kinds of woodland creatures, presenting numerous hiding and nesting places for birds and other animals; the density of bird’s nests, for example, is much higher than in a forest habitat. as photographer pål hermansen explains, “nature conservationists in the local municipality would like to see the cars removed, while culture conservationists want to make it a cultural monument. i hope that the nature conservationists will begin to realize that nature is already doing a good job in taking this site over and that they eventually join the culture conservationists to make it a combined nature and culture reserve.” additional photos (click pic) by svein nordrum, pål johannesen, dieter klein and thomas geersing -- source link
