vaguelyconcernedtriangle:capitalism-and-analytics: Ah yes, the evils of Capitalism, the market invents a product that aids drowsy drivers from falling asleep at the wheel and getting into an accident.Darn that Capitalism and their…..SAFETY!!!! I’m actually on the socialista side this time, truckers are overworked, underpaid and vastly outnumbered by deliveries.Anything that pushes people past the limits of normal working capacity is just a band-aid to try to avoid the real solution of better working conditions and better pay. What does that have to do with being overworked, underpaid, or vastly outnumbered by deliveries? Those symptoms exist in both systems: capitalism and socialism. This product does nothing to “push people past the limits of normal working capacity”, it merely addresses that already unfortunate existing phenomenon . Furthermore, the product is not restricted to truck drivers, the technology is intended for all drivers (though currently being tested to ensure the vibrations don’t distract drivers). According to the article (though truthfully I am skeptical of their numbers, they seem unreasonably high):“An estimated 60% of Americans have operated a vehicle while sleepy, and a whopping 40% have fallen asleep while driving!”The unfortunate reality is that people will continue to take unnecessary risks and make poor decisions in life voluntarily. The perfect solution would be that people always make smart and safe decisions, but that is naïve and even the most socialist policies will have to address this phenomenon. Furthermore, even in-scope of truck drivers, if you significantly improve their pay and working conditions, then you’ll still have truck drivers who are drowsy at the wheel through voluntary actions (staying up & going out late, taking side gigs, etc.) Ultimately, I agree with you that there are other solutions that would have a greater positive impact, but they aren’t mutually exclusive, so criticizing “capitalism” for developing one solution because another exists is foolish. -- source link
