urbynloft: Why some people hate LeBron James: “He’s arrogant.” – so what? Rappers are arrogant. But the same people who hate LeBron for it, love Lil’ Wayne for it. Look, they put him on the cover of ESPN The Magazine when he was 17! People have been drooling over him since he was in middle school. Is he supposed to be a Kevin Durant-type personality? To his credit, LeBron said last night that he was humbled last year. “Kobe has 5 rings!” – Three of which he got with Shaq, all of them with Phil Jackson. Do you really think that LeBron wouldn’t have had similar success if he had a Shaq-like teammate and/or Phil Jackson? “Look at Magic Johnson!” – To that I say, look at Magic Johnson’s teammates. “His mom got ****** by his teammate! Jordan’s mom never did that!” (Yes, I actually saw this on FB) – What control does he or I or anyone else have over our parents’ actions? Right. It used to be, “He doesn’t have a ring!” – This was true until last night, but did it ever occur to anyone that he came into the league right out of high school, and therefore couldn’t reasonably be viewed the same as Michael Jordan, who spent three years in college and was coached by Dean Smith? Perspective matters. And, there once was a time when Jordan had zero rings, too. Now it’s, “He only has ONE ring!” – There was once a time when Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird only had one. It’s sorta the first step. But what this really means is that Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Reggie Miller are trash, right? “He can’t be Jordan. Jordan has 6 rings!” – Well, Robert Horry has 7. Is he better than MJ? I’ll wait. I could go on and on…but I won’t. Everyone who hates LeBron James should sit down and shut up. Seriously. This man is the anti-stereotype. You don’t hear about him being disrespectful or ignorant, getting arrested, or fathering children all over the place. It appears that he has done things the right way, so far. In his comments last night LeBron James said he looked himself in the mirror and realized he had to get better on and off the floor. That’s self accountability, folks. How often do we hear that? I know some people will continue to rag on LeBron for any and everything, but those people will be revealing more about themselves than him. People who hate LeBron James for non-basketball, on the court reasons, have negative feelings towards themselves. People who hate LeBron James for how he plays the game, don’t know basketball, and will have to just deal with it. I’m not an NBA guru or an insider. I’m just someone who’s watched the NBA for 21 years, whose favorite player is Michael Jordan, and who thinks people should back off and let LeBron James be great. I defend LeBron because I know what it feels like to be disrespected and heavily criticized for no damn reason - all successful people do.
