ripplestitchskein:andhewonherheart:CS AU:When the crew of The Jolly Roger fishes a body out of the water, they never expected it to be the Crown Princess, just like Emma never expected to end up on a pirate ship. How did I not notice they used an electric spot light? That is electric right? History side of the fandom activate.OKThis took a heck ton of research but I have an explanation (sort of):(for y'all who are lazy the more probable solutions are at the bottom)The first step is finding the time period. Ignoring all the weirdness and inconstancies of OUAT time periods, I treated this part as though I was finding the time period in this world.Aspect 1-original storyJM Barrie’s original Peter Pan, or “The Boy Who Never Grew Up” was published in 1905. This would give us 1900-1910 time period. However, the original story time period isn’t necessarily canon in OUAT.Aspect 2- attireAfter a little bit of research, I originally though that the Jones’ uniforms best matched the 1900 uniform, but after more digging and a little use of intuition, I found that it was closer to earlier time period attire, similar to that used in the American Revolution (late 1700′s)and maybe Victorian EraShort Answer: I’m not really sure, but I’m gonna assume Victorian era to make things easierAspect 3- ships and navigation This was easier, since all sources stated that, by the 1900′s, for long expeditions, old-fashioned sailing ships and navigation techniques such as compass, stars, etc. were still used, which matches up with the Jones’ methods and the Jolly Roger. From all this, I’m going to guess late Victorian Era (1890-1905)Next, one must figure out the lighting techniques used. Possible candidates for the spotlight–>(Fun fact: while I was researching this I found a site that was dedicated solely to the history lamps)1) Yablokchov candle/electric candle--> This works in terms of brightness and size, as if you look at images of this at work, it is (or at least seems) SUPER bright and around the same brightness and size as the spotlight. Why it can’t be the spotlight: it was used for street lamps, so one can assume it can’t really be carried around in the way Mr. Smee is.2) David Misell’s flashlight–>In 1887, the first dry cell battery (the kind of battery used at home today, a portable chemical battery) was invented. This made it possible for British inventor Misell to create the very first flashlight, which looked like this:Problem: It’s very tiny3) The incandescent lamp –>That’s a very fancy word for the type of lightbulb Thomas Edison invented. While in a theater, a spotlight with an incandescent light would need a circuit that wouldn’t be portable, it might have been possible to, using a dry cell battery and some light distortion create a spotlight-ish thing (I don’t really know). The distortion of light principle could have also been used for Misell’s tiny flashlight.Long story short: It’s plausible, but not likely that Killian had a lamp from his world/area(not to mention it would probably run out of battery after 100-ish years sooo…)(Unless anti-aging in Neverland also calls for batteries)The more realistic (but not as fun) possibility:Keep in mind that by this point, Killian had traveled to all sorts of worlds under the employment of Pan. He more than likely went to some worlds with more advanced technology. And if he found a spotlight, it would be safe to assume that he acquired it, since that would be useful on a ship. -- source link
