Tweet source | Article link“Concern trolling” at its finest by which I mean shittiest.#MuslimBan architect Stephen Miller tells students to harass feminist groups over their lack of concern for Muslim women, as part of an “anti-Muslim week” on their campus. FYI I’ve written an answer for feminist bloggers to use when confronted with this concern troll question: How to Counter Anti-Feminist Arguments - The “What About the Women in ____” Argument”Feminism since the ‘60’s has been global and intersectional in its concern. While not all feminists are globally focused or intersectional, and there is racism and white privilege within the movement, the movement itself has been the driving force for women’s rights and freedom around the world - politically, socially and economically. But every time a feminist brings up an issue that affects white or western women - domestic violence in U.S., media representation of sexuality, wage discrepancies - anti-feminists jump in with, “why aren’t you talking about women in Asia/Africa/Middle East”, you must not care about them, you’re being selfish and/or racist!!!“In light of Game of Throne star Maisie William’s recent misunderstanding of feminism (“Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams doesn’t get Emma Watson’s “first-world feminism”), I would like to point out a couple of giant flaws in the “what about the women in ____, why doesn’t feminism care about them?” argument. 1. The argument is factually wrong. Feminism is and has been the leading force behind women’s rights in every country on the planet, and no movement cares more about international women’s rights, and does more on their behalf, than feminism. To say “well you don’t care about ___ because you’re not talking about ___ at that moment,“ is a ridiculous statement. When I say "I care about women,” I’m not mentioning the environment, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about the environment. It just means that AT THE PARTICULAR MOMENT I AM TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE. 2. They are using false moral superiority - “I care about those women and you don’t, and you claim to be a feminist” - yet they are doing NOTHING to help women in those countries, while your efforts directly or indirectly are helping women worldwide, even if by example. This is concern trolling to make people who aren’t doing anything to help feel morally superior to PEOPLE WHO ARE ACTUALLY TRYING TO HELP, BY DISMISSING THE MOVEMENT THAT IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST HELP TO THE PEOPLE IN QUESTION. Anti-feminists who use the “but what about women in _____” argument need to be called out on the fact that they aren’t doing ANYTHING themselves, so to try to undermine the people who ARE trying to help is to use human misery to score points - a pretty shallow and pathetic move. When you get these questions in your inbox, check out the submitter’s blog - 10 times out of 10 they aren’t posting about the topic they supposedly care about. It’s all bout the trollin’. The only response they deserve is the delete or block button, or you can leverage any or all of this post if you do decide to respond for your readers’ sake. -- source link
