imrisah: scarfdoctor: imrisah: scarfdoctor: everkings: drawingden: Tom Hardy Process by AaronGriffinArt Process of art proves that it’s talent, not magic. “Talent” is the wrong word for this as well I’m afraid. I really don’t agree on how it’s used as an umbrella term for all that actually makes an artist be who they are in the moment of drawing: it seems to oversimplify something that is infinitely more complex and hard conquered; “talent” suggests that stuff works well for an artist just because they have that inherently and not because they worked for years to get better and better until finally somebody came in and recognized that they are talented. It’s way too similar to “magic” to be acceptable to me.There isn’t a single word that can define what actually makes good art. What you’re looking for is possibly the combination of “practice”, “time”, “knowledge”, “understanding”, “fundamentals”, “intuition”, “dedication”, “personal taste”, “hard work”, “experience” - not to be confused with practice - and an infinite number of other elements that come into play which make art such a personal and difficult job. There is no recipe, talent definitely isn’t a defining point but rather something that you will be hopefully able to showcase once you have mastered all the rest. If it even is possible to master any of those anyway, meaning that you will always find space for improvement. So this is why I think “talent” is just as belittling as “magic”. You are totally right, I’m looking for a better word. In my job people are always asking me for the magic pill for learning a language (am linguist) and a talent for languages means time, patience, effort, and breaking and reforming your brain. So I totally see what you’re saying. “Just good at languages” for me sounds like “talent” for you: and I want to use the right words for you. I’m glad you agree! I was talking about art specifically, but it definitely goes for any other profession/ability! I think you can call it skill? Because a skill is something you have learned, spent time on, refined, that took time to acquire, a lot of dedication and even more hard work and practice.Just my 2cents. :) -- source link
