facts-i-just-made-up:Siblings of a different Species- Born to the same mother! An extremely rare birth occurred in Boston last week when a mother cat gave birth to one kitten and one turtle. Cats ovulate with up to six simultaneous eggs, and these eggs can be inseminated by different fathers. Though it is rare for a turtle to mate with a cat, it’s not unheard of, but it’s extremely rare for the cat to conceive. In order for a viable embryo to develop, the mother cat has to have at least some turtle DNA, meaning the cat can only bear a turtle if one of her ancestors was a turtle, making her a “carrier” of the turtle genome, though she does not herself show any turtacular characteristics. Though a recessive trait, once paired with a full turtle the result is inevitable, and will bear a fully turtloid offspring. The cat on the right is not however a full cat, as it too contains the recessive turtle genome, and can itself mate successfully with another turtle. -- source link
