philamuseum:Image: Untitled (We will no longer be seen and not heard) by Barbara Kruger, 1985International Women’s DayToday, the Philadelphia Museum of Art recognizes International Women’s Day by sharing this piece by Barbara Kruger from the collection. In this work Kruger invokes the aphorism “Children should be seen and not heard.” The children depicted here range from school-age youngsters to youthful adults whose gestures hint at—but do not literally make the sign language for— the words printed nearby. Some of the gestures in fact seem lewd, lending an aggressive tone to the generational and social dissent that the words and pictures suggest. The new millennium has certainly, “witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation”, but what are some of the issues still facing women’s advancement? What do you think is or should be the foremost issue that society face on behalf of women’s advancement today? We dedicate this day to all the women and men worldwide that are working to make Kruger’s title, that we will no longer be seen and not heard, a reality for women everywhere. -- source link
