Marvel Cinematic Universe: Civil War AU peter watches from behind a steeple as they set the casket down. they don’t blame sharon; they don’t blame tony. he knows who natasha blames, and why sam, clint, and she are no where to be found. from the corner of his eye, he spies danny in matt’s suit, and there’s luke in his black windbreaker, and peter swears tears are streaming down the older man’s face just like they are on his. thor sobs freely; nick waits. then there’s a flash of light, and tony steps forward, then nick, then thor with his shaky hands, then sharon, followed by pietro, and then wanda. they fold the flag, lay it atop the casket, and within minutes, the mound of marble is being lowered into the ground. peter remembers his aunt telling him it was a death of a child. he was still twenty-seven, despite seventy years underground. peter thinks it’s ironic. he knew how amicable the man had been about going under after his ordeal, and they’d joked about how much longer it would take until he was downstairs for good. peter told him it would take forever. peter was wrong. from where he’s perched atop, he can see the shadowy figure of the winter soldier melding in with the fog near the stone pillars, his fists clasped, his domino mask pressed tightly against the expanse of his pale, white skin. the glint of the metal doesn’t faze peter, and peter knows that he doesn’t faze captain america’s oldest friend. there’s death in the older man’s eyes. the death sentence is sharon’s, peter knows, and tony’s. and nick’s. maybe even thor, possibly all of shield, perhaps everyone who’s ever given his best friend a hard time. afterwards, peter knows that a glock will end up in the soldier’s mouth, and that he’ll finally be at peace with the one man who had faith in him when everyone else had turned him away. peter remembers his aunt telling him that it’s the death of a child, since he’d battled sickness for one half of his life, and monsters for the other half. he’d yet to love truly, to breathe freely, to be happy. the crowd thins out, danny and luke disappear, but the winter soldier persists in his vigil just as much as peter does. night falls, and peter’s knees are cracked and bleeding, and he’s cramped and in pain, but the soldier is as frozen as the night, and peter won’t move unless he does. when he finally does, peter sighs. the domino mask falls away, and lands atop the fresh soil, and peter jumps down right afterwards. there’s a moment of silence as natasha, clint, and sam appear from behind their stones, and fall behind the soldier. peter takes his mask from his pocket and drops the damp cloth atop the domino mask. aunt may told him it was the death of a child. yet steve rogers was hardly a child, but who was peter parker to correct anyone? that same peter parker that had to watch friends die before switching sides for good? no. that same peter parker would never speak out again. but, if he could say it to someone, he would. it wasn’t the death of a child when the war broke out. it was the death of a dream. one, peter frowns, steve couldn’t live to see come true. -- source link
