nstrs9decolonized:Native seed rematriation: When we entered the UofM Museum Anthropological Archaeology, the academic lab team greeted us with a display of indigenous seeds from their collection… with a strange tension in the room as the scientists proudly displayed their collection and natives working to reclaim their family members met one another, two world-views, two missions, one to research/preserve the other looking to rematriate.. both standing over the precious golden treasure.. @jasonwesaw of the Pokagon Potowatomi said to the archivists, “could you take them out of the wrapper at least? Looking at them through this plastic is like seeing your relatives locked up behind bars.” And they did, one by one, opening up the specimen.. indigenous ancestors, so that we could talk to them, explain to them that we hadn’t forgotten and we want them to come home. Then @anungokwe belted out a powerful song.. a song created to tell the ancestors, locked up in museums and in labs, in archives and the ivory tower that we are here for them and we love them. The power in Shannon’s voice pieced lan walls, shelves, rooms.. she sang with a force that filled he room. Jason too dang a song gifted to him by elders, just for this moment. He stood over the last known native seeds from his peoples.. and dig deep, singing to them. I know they felt it… #nativeseed #rematriate #decolonizemishigama #uofm #ummaa #miigwetch #sacredseeds #seedsaving #agroecology #swgrows (at University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology) -- source link
