The Weekenders 21st Anniversary Celebration Week — Breaking The Fourth Wall: “The year that the show premiered three other shows premiered that had direct address in them. It looked like we ripped those off. But we were working on this two years before. Partly it came from the fact that I like having narrators on shows. And it partly came out from us having what they call educational qualifying show. We had to have a pro-social educational message in every episode, so it was easier to do that if we had a character summing it up. And then once a character starts to do that at the end we are like: “Oh, this is deadly. It has to be funny.” We decided late in the game that the background would become grey, we had to figure out some way to separate him from the traditional storytelling, it wasn’t enough to just have him look at the camera because an animated character doesn’t look too much different when he looks at the camera. You’re used to see that angle in the eyes anyway, so after the fact we started to do this 90% black and white background.” - Doug Langdale (The Relunchables) -- source link
