Engineers learning politics AND ethics? If only liberal arts education there was something which could address this issue. How could someone learn critical thinking be trained accross disciplines? Are you implying liberal arts isn’t an ideologically-driven part of education with its own agenda that definitely won’t abuse its position to benefit its own followers above everyone else? @silverscreenx I’m implying that in order for people to consider the ethical ramifications of their work they need to be trained in general ethical principles And how it intersects with their line of work. It sounds like you Really distrust the humanities, which is a story I’d like to hear. If you’re worried about a field “abusing it’s position” I’d love to hear your thoughts on the cuts to high school art and music programs. If you Really want to get into it we could talk about the literacy rate in the USA.Yes, I distrust the humanities, because the humanities are run by a bunch of liberal ideologues. How was I not clear before?Hell, even without that, saying ‘If only you ascribed to my morals and ethics, you wouldn’t do these things! That’s why you should be forced to study the things I believe before you can do anything!’ is a hugely shit way of looking at the world. Also STEM and business, in Asian nations, lift women out of poverty and help them to escape misogynistic environments. They also help poor people in general by giving them a skill and a means to provide for their families. Humanities however, does not have the same effect because it doesn’t give you employable skills. Most of the people majoring in humanities are those who have money already. Wait… does this mean, since most of the people majoring in liberal arts/humanities come from a place of economic privilege, and are mostly surrounded by people from their own economic group and never get exposed to the hardships of life… that liberal arts majors actually have LESS empathy than STEM/business majors? In my experience critical thinking and studying ethics isn’t something that necessarily comes with a liberal arts degree. I only really covered it because I made sure to do so, and in the case of ethics it’s because my field of study was in a less pleasant field….Yeah, the solution to evil politicians is obviously ethics training for engineers and scientists….I didn’t have the choice unfortunately, since my engineering degree did not leave room for any electives, but I certainly wanted to take those sorts of courses because our education on matters of ethics was…vestigial, at best.So all that education didnt teach you to learn on your own? Thier are hundreds of thousands of books and information to develop your own understanding of ethics and morality without the need to be told. -- source link
