ars-videndi:Basilique Notre-Dame-Du-Port, Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne. The southern portal.Notre-Dame-du-Port is a romanesque church founded by the Bishop of Clermont, Saint Avitus, in the 6th century. It was rebuilt in the 11th or 12th century after being burned down by the Normans. The church was added to the UNESCOWorld Heritage list in 1998 as part of Camino de Santiago.During the French Revolution, the church was vandalized. The furnishings got burned and some carvings on the outside got partly destroyed. Here on the tympanum of the southern portal, all faces are lost.On the lintel are three scenes (from left):- The Adoration of the Magi. On the very left are the three Magi´s three horses. Under the “roof” arevisible the Virgin’s nimbusand the star that led the Magi to the place.- The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. The temple of Jerusalem is symbolized by the arcade and the little turret. A lantern or a censer is hanging in the temple. To the right of the temple are the priest, Jesus and Mary. The priest and Mary have a “normal” nimbus, while Jesus´ nimbus shows a cross.- The Baptism of Jesus. St. John the Baptist to the left, Jesus standing in the river Jordan - and an angel holding the clothes.A Maiestas Domini, flanked by two seraphs (note the three pairs of wings), is placed over the lintel. The two large sculptures next to the doors are less damaged. On the left is Isaiah (standing on two falling angels), on the right St. John the Baptist.Source: Martin on Flickr (here and here) -- source link
