juhsteen: I experienced a degree of indirect body shaming today in the small town I moved to for being a woman who does not shave my armpits. The story is long, and I won’t go into it, but here is my rant because I feel in need of support right now and I know this community is full of strong feminist men and women who would no doubt have my back. It really surprises me that in 2016 there is still so much judgement and expectation in our society cast upon women’s bodies. As a woman who supports challenging gendered social control, I can only hope that more people try to expand their perspective on what is natural, normal, and acceptable for women and help stop the cycle of stigma surrounding body hair. And hey, maybe even try to challenge the conformist beauty standards placed upon us by the beauty industry (which, big surprise, is predominantly ruled by men making millions off of convincing women that body hair is abject, a natural face is undesirable, menstruation is dirty and should be kept private, and anyone over a size 4 should be questioning their weight). I firmly believe that women have a right to choose what they do to their bodies, and be met with equal respect and opportunity. Whether you choose to shave or not, cast no judgement, support one another, and direct your focus on the real issues of the world that need solving. Hair is just hair, and my body is my own. If it’s on me, it’s not hurting you. So get over it. -- source link
