cenchempics: PIEZO PRISM Rochelle salt, aka potassium sodium tartrate tetrahydrate, NaKC4H4O6·4H2O, was the first material found to produce an electric discharge when compressed. This phenomenon, called piezoelectricity, is used in many lighters and grill starters. The salt is relatively easy to grow, says crystallization hobbyist Dmitry Shintyakov, so large, clear prisms like the one shown here are readily accessible. Shintyakov shares his methods online, so you can join the fun.
