they-hide-in-the-dark: Grýla - A giantess from Icelandic folklore, Grýla only appears on Christmas eve. She is ugly, with three heads that each have three eyes, long curved fingernails, goat-like horns and ears that dangle down to her shoulders. She also has a beard that is heavily matted and teeth as black as rocks. Throughout the year she has the ability to detect badly behaved children, so on Christmas Eve she comes down from her cave and kidnaps the children that have been misbehaving all year. Grýla is said to have an insatiable appetite and children are her favourite snack. She takes any children that she has abducted back to her cave and she cooks them into a stew, which is her favourite dish. According to some Icelandic folktales Grýla is dead but children are still warned to be on their best behaviour, just in case. -- source link
