c-aesarion:Hey everyone! I’m here to tell you today about a project that I promised to tell you about at least a month ago. It’s HOW TO ORGANIZE A CLASSICS MURDER MYSTERY.Overview: You should ideally have 5-10 people involved as players (though you can have more!) and about two moderators. The role of a player is to role-play the person/creature/being which they have been assigned and to find the murderer (or protect their secret if they ARE the murderer) and the role of a moderator is to allow the plot to progress by giving clues, and making challenges. You will have a group theme/story set up. We played with the characters of the Iliad and our moderators were the gods, but you could have a demi-god story where the gods once again are the moderators, or you could have a god scenario where the muses are the moderators! The possibilities are endless. The story will have one plot which all characters have been introduced- this is the creative job of the organizers to come up with. It sets the stage for the murder. For example:The Trojan War is in full swing when the gods choose to call a council of mortals. All characters present are transported from the fields of Ilium to Mount Olympus, where a priest has been chosen to mediate a peaceful discussion to find the end to the war. While everyone is on a washroom break the priest is MURDERED. One of the characters has killed him- who is it?Winning: To win this event you must end the allotted hour and a half with the most points. At the conclusion of the event, everyone involved will vote for who they believe to be the murderer. Those who guess correctly will be awarded 5 points. Those who complete their ‘major goal’ by the end of the event will be awarded 3 points. Any ‘minor goal’ completed will win you 1 point.Fighting and Dying: To fight someone, propose a test to the death (one cannot refuse a fight). One of: Cunning, Strength, or Dexterity. If they agree to your test the moderators set the stage for your battle (chose the battle you will compete in- a staring contest, card stacking contest, staring contest, balance contest, etc. If they counter with another test then the moderators will decide which player to favor.Should you die- you are not entirely out. You may still speak with others as a ‘ghost’, guess the murderer, and complete your minor goals. However, you will no longer be awarded points for completing your major goal. You may however complete your DEATH GOAL, for which you will be awarded 2 points. Each character is given an envelope before the game begins, containing a character sheet (pictured above). The character sheet includes:1) A quick bio of the character (especially helpful if you have players which aren’t Classics majors!)2) MAJOR GOAL (for example- Achilles: Your mortal enemy walks before you. Defeat Hector in battle and send him to Tartarus where he belongs!)3) MINOR GOALS (for example- Achilles: Always suggest a different ‘test’ than your opponent. Ask 3 people if they like your shirt. Compete in at least 2 battles of strength).4) ITEMS: Each character will have an item to make the game more interesting (for example- a crown that can revive a friend from the dead or a shield which makes all opponents have to defeat you TWICE before you can die).5) DEATH GOAL: a goal to make the afterlife more interesting for the lost souls before they cross the river Styx (example- give your item to a friend after you die to help them in life).REMEMBER:People should not show one another their character sheets! The murderer’s says that they are the murderer! They should keep it secret- even to their closest allies.Moderators can give clues through-out the game, and can be persuaded. Reward the gods with sacrifices (bring me chips) and they may be generous. They can give hints or make announcements to help people form their own opinions about who the murderer is.The game is meant to be fun and spontaneous! Remember that the rules are flexible and can be made to suit your particular group!Also- people should come in costume. Costumes are the best. -- source link
