uwmspeccoll: A Mighty-billed Catesby FeathursdayLast week we highlighted wood engravings of some mighty-billed water birds from Thomas Bewick’s A History of British Birds. This week we bring you a few more magnificent beaks, this time with a revisit to our 1974 folio facsimile set of English naturalist Mark Catesby’s Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. Originally published between 1729 and 1747, our facsimile is reproduced from the 3rd edition housed at the Boston Athenaeum, published in a limited edition of 500 copies by The Beehive Press of Savannah, Georgia. The set was designed and printed by The Stinehour Press of Vermont, with plates printed by The Meriden Gravure Company. Shown here are: Wood Stork (Mycteria americana), which Catesby identifies as a Wood Pelican. American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus), described by Catesby as a White Curlew.Immature American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus), which Catesby identifies as a separate species, the Brown Curlew.View previous posts from Catesby’s Natural History.View more Feathursday posts. -- source link
