madeleine92posts:On this day in history Isabella I of Castile (Isabel I de Castilla, Isabel de Trastámara) was born in Madrigal de las Altas Torres. She was the first child of John I of Castile by his second wife Isabella of Portugal. The queen gave birth to her only daughter on Maundy Thursday in the royal palaces of Madrigal de las Altas Torres - this information proceeds from the letter that Isabella’s father, king John I, sent to the city of Segovia on April 26 1451, in which he informed of the said event. “I let you know that by the Grace of God, my precious and beloved wife, doña Isabel gave birth to an infanta, on the past Thursday, which I inform you of, thanking God, because of the deliberation of the said Queen, my wife, and given the birth of the said infanta - in relation to which, I will send to you Johan de Busto, who will bring the gift.”The “past Thursday”in this case coincides with Maundy Thursday - and this is precisely why the future Catholic Queen would celebrate the said event with his family and court, during her whole life. The chronicel Doctor Toledo precised that she was born in Madrigal, on Thursday, April 22th at 4:30 pm. It’s true Isabella was born at the palace in Madrigal de las Altas Torres. It was a modest place, it served as a temporal residence, given the active, touring life of the King and his court - hence the modesty of the palace, made in austere Mudéjar fashion. The whole village of Madrigal, including all its buildings belonged to Isabel of Portugal, and it seems she became enamoured of it, given she had been chosing this place as a shelter for herself, during decades of her life. The infanta was baptised at the church of saint Nicholas. She was not being breastfed by her mother; María López, wife of Juan de Molina functioned as her wet - nurse - there is no doubt in that particular case, since according to the account books of the future Queen, Isabella granted María 10.000 maravedíes, on March 3th 1495 “because the said María López gave Her Highness her milk.” Source: “Isabel La Católica; Vida y reinado” by Tarsicio de AzconaPictures:1.
