This ad, placed at the height of the “Spanish Flu” pandemic, demonstrated one of the few effective measures that people had at the time against the disease – washing hands. Handwashing was, at the time, a relatively recent practice. It was only in the middle of the 1800s that doctors like the Hungarian Ignaz Semmelweis realized that doctors’ washing their hands would help keep patients healthy.
