celebratingamazingwomen: Anna Komnene (1083-1153) was a Byzantine princess, and a highly educated woman for her time, demonstrating great skills in history, languages, and medicine, among many other fields. Her most important claim to fame, however, is as a historian, having written The Alexiad, which today remains the main source of Byzantine political history documenting its time. Additionally, she administrated a very large hospital and orphanage in Constantinople, and taught medicine there and in various other locations. -- source link
