Most of them have since been decimated through genocide or assimilation; but many of those tribes are still with us today, and that’s important. Right now, there are 565 federally recognized tribes, however, many tribes weren’t recognized and that remains a point of contention. The Lumbee is an example of a tribe in constant flux over their lack of “legal” recognition. Currently, there are approximately 4.1 million Alaskan Natives and American Indians, about .9 percent of the total U.S. population. This is in contrast to estimated numbers of Natives between 50-100 million pre-European populations. Most of this should be common knowledge, but it’s not. -- source link
