Out you go, I gotta make a story out of this mess.” #me @ quentin tarantino fans Mad Max: Fury Road and practically every film JJ Abrams has ever made including The Force Awakens. All Martin Scorsese films I’m pretty sure every Woody Allen film (he honestly can’t direct his films are saved by the grace of his editors so add that to the pile of reasons to hate him) Every good Star Wars films (the original trilogy and The Force Awakens) Joss Whedon’s editor is Lisa Lassek Dede Allen did Bonnie and Clyde, The Breakfast Club, Dog Day Afternoon, The Adams Family… Like Yes. Women rule post production Which means we have final say on the movie We’re the ones that control your emotions Don’t forget it. Literally the reason why the first Star Wars trilogy was largely phenomenal, but the prequels a hot mess. Between the two? George Lucas divorced his editor. reminds me that may favorite character in hail caesar was C.C. Calhoun the film bored me to hell, but watch that part, it’s a one scene wonder for Frances McDormand remember, whatever it is you are doing, you are not paying enough obeisance to the Totemic Power of Women, because accusations of not paying enough obeisance to the Totemic Power of Women are a great way to enact the omnidirectional punishment popular people employ as a means of finding unpopular people so they can be further punished remember that nothing is real except the punishment of the unpopular remember that it will never ever end, remember that they will not stop and they will not be stopped, remember life will never be worth tolerating There’s a definite degree of truth in this praise of woman film editors. One of the first things I was taught about the production of movies is, “a film is made in the cutting room.” There are a great many significant female film editors who “made” many of your favorite movies, including many “macho” films. But, @brazenautomaton gets at why this post, despite being largely accurate in the facts, is vile in its tone. This isn’t a celebration of female film editors, it’s a denigration of male directors, a deliberately disingenuous ignorance of the fact that film is a team effort. Only two female editors are even mention above, and not even until four reblogs in! Despite six male directors being mentioned. This isn’t about praising Sally Menke, it’s about shitting on Quentin Tarantino and all the rest of the directors mentioned. I’m glad when editors get recognition for their contributions; they really don’t get enough given the amount of work they do and their influence on the completed piece. A good editor is invaluable. Post-production for movies takes a lot of time because it’s just that much work and, honestly, because there is only so much coherency a director can enforce from the set alone. Same goes for writing - where the editor is relegated to the acknowledgements, if they show up at all.You nail the element that makes me uncomfortable with OP exactly. When you feel that people are not getting proportionate credit, the right thing to do is give them more credit. Make them the focus. The original joke seems more about promoting gender conflict and the subsequent comments on trashing male directors than either is about celebrating (women) editors. -- source link
