For shame. do people actually not do this?I live on the coast but in a Midwestern Bubble, for which I am thankful I grew up in MA and live in VA, and I’ve never heard of this. If I bump into someone, I’ll say “sorry” or “pardon,” or at the closest “oops,” but I have never seen this “ope” phenomenon, to the point where I’m just assuming it rhymes with “hope” but I’m not actually sure. “sorry”, “pardon”, “‘scuse me” but I also have no idea what this “ope” is. “Ope” is big in Canada too. My best guess is that it’s an ultra-shortened combination of “Oh, pardon me” and “Oops”, to convey in a split-second that oh shit, you didn’t mean to do that, sorry, you alright? I mean, it’s very useful to society to have an exclamation to indicate that you bumped someone unintentionally and your bump should not be understood as an attack or insult, because then you end up with a lot of unnecessary fights. True but this particular exclamation indicates merely “a collision happened” (or “almost happened”). Which gives it a terrific array of passive aggressive uses. -- source link
