In just the last 16 years, Guatemala has lost an astonishing 17 percent of its forest cover, driven by illegal logging and clearance for cattle grazing, rubber, sugarcane and palm oil. Land is left eroded while communities face unreliable means to support themselves and risk of deadly landslides after heavy rains.
