meirl-bot:me irlMy family has an extensive history of mental illnesses. Two of my aunts have attempted suicide (one of them several times), my grandma often said she was going to kill herself. Depression and threats against their own life were common ground growing up, and we (me and my cousins) were taught that “people who really wanna die, don’t tell anyone”. None of the suicidal people in our family ever managed to die, so it made sense that they possibly weren’t trying that hard, or just wanted attention. Until I was 23, I was still utterly convinced that, if someone said they would kill themselves, they wouldn’t actually do it. And then a friend did it. We weren’t actually close, but he was friends with my husband (before we were even married) and he used to call me mom. One day, when they were at work, he told a friend that he was going to kill himself, then he went home and did it. I can never disbelieve anyone about that ever again. -- source link
