iheartautopsy:This kidney was more than 7 pounds!!! Compare that to the normal size of a kidney which is about 1/3 of a pound! The first time I saw these things in person I thought they looked like crazy see creatures or something. They are crazy to cut too because they are filled with tiny little cysts filled with fluid that just squirts everywhere!!! Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is genetic, usually as an autosomal dominant trait. If one parent carries the gene, the children will have a 50% chance of developing the disorder. The kidneys slowly become completely overtaken by small cysts until eventually the entire kidney is cystic. When there is no normal kidney left it can’t function properly so then the patient is in end stage kidney failure. The problem is you can’t live without at least one functioning kidney. At this point treatment would be dialysis or kidney transplant. The patients can also develop cysts in other organs including the liver.#iheartautopsy #mysterydiagnosis #pathology #med #medical #medicina #medschool #medstudent #science #grossanatomy #anatomy #pathology #healtheducation (at http://iheartautopsy.tumblr.com)COSA AVEVO DETTO EH?Puntuale come la morte sbem!W me -- source link
