Much of what I am now, particularly in my professional endeavors, was shaped in my years in ABS-CBN News. . This was where I learned to pursue the truth, to be relentless in the face of threats to life or limb, to persevere despite the challenges, to be resourceful when confronted with limits and take responsibility for my actions when they are called out. . The company is not perfect. Which companies are anyway? But whatever shortcomings the company may have, can be remedied when it faces the representatives of the people. . To close down a network because of personal reasons is not only vindictive but also dangerous to a supposed democracy. It will pave the way not only to an atmosphere of fear among journalists, but also the spread of intimidation among ordinary individuals who may criticize government and its officials for lapses and shortcomings. . It’s a shame seeing supposed friends share the sympathy of others who call for the closure of the network. Then again, maybe we didn’t share the same appreciation for free speech and freedom of the press all along. And I am thankful that now I know who and what you are.
