Holmden Street in Pithole City, Pennsylvania, 1866. Pithole City was one of the first oil boom towns in the United States. Wells struck in 1865 turned this previously remote area into a town of 20,000 people with 54 hotels. By 1877, the town had disappeared as the oil had dried up. -- source link
