Kinda hard once it is turned inside out to be a boy again It wasn’t the boy who decided he should transition. This is heinous child abuse. No one should transition when they’re not even old enough to have fucking dental implants yet. I’m all for LGBT rights but kids shouldn’t be transitioning. They’re just not mature enough to be making that choice and there’s too much of a risk that they’re being influenced by adults with an agenda. For those who are curious about the original source, I’ll link the article here. This is just another case that goes to show how important it is that transgenderism is treated like any other medical condition. In no world should a 12-year-old been able to start hormonal treatments. Hormone blockers would have been one thing, but this boy was given estrogen beginning when he was 12. That’s irresponsible on the part of the medical practitioners and the parents. This is what happens when being transgender is treated as a social/political position instead of being properly handled as a medical condition. Not only do stories like this create anti-transgender sentiment, but they also add more weight to an argument that transgender people are just sick in the head and/or confused. Transgender people are not “sick in the head” as some might say, but being trans is something that originates in the brain (it’s a neurological condition). Our best understanding, based upon the current scientific studies, is that transgenderism is caused by abnormalities in certain brain structures. This isn’t an illness like schizophrenia where trans people are plagued with delusions, but rather the brain’s understanding of the body’s sex is at odds with the reality, and the most reliable treatment the medical world currently has to offer is to alter the body to ease the distress caused by the perceived incompatibility. This is why being trans is not like being gay, lesbian, or bisexual; living in a tolerant society allows same sex-attracted people to live happy, fulfilling lives without the risk of inherent harm to themselves or others in doing so. A trans person, even in the most accepting of communities, will continue to experience emotional and psychological distress if not able receive treatment to transition. The problems we face as trans people are not primarily with society (though there are certainly societal hurdles and actual issues of transphobia to be combated), but rather they are internal issues caused by this disconnect between our biological sex and the sex our brains expect to see reflected in our bodies (ie gender dysphoria). Reblogging for the addition. Please go to reliable psychiatrists if you’re unsure, especially if you’re a child. -- source link
