As per family tradition, we attended the season finale event at our local figure-8 racetrack. We usually do a cattle-call on facebook and bring a mixed group of a dozen or so people, and have a hell of a time. It’s a demolition derby, and the main events–as pictured–are the bus races and trailering event. The track is in an eight shape, so there’s an intersection in the center where drivers have to thread through the front- or back-runners as the race progresses, which often leads to collisions and rollovers. You can see that one of the busses got flipped–but they brought out a forklift, flipped him back upright, and he kept at it. The trailering event is even more chaos–every vehicle has a trailer attached, and you get disqualified if it detaches, so everyone’s trying to knock off eachother’s trailers. You can see the number 9 pickup truck lost a rear wheel–so he built up some speed and jumped on to number 66′s trailer and made him drag him around for a good six laps. That lasted until they got t-boned by the little guy on the end there, number 76, who actually managed to roll 9 over when he hit. Nobody was hurt–these cars are built to take a lot of damage and protect their drivers–but it was a hell of a good time. Similar events take place across the country–I highly encourage you guys to see if there’s one near you! Support your local adrenaline junkies. -- source link
