In 1998, Newsweek ran a story about gay conversion therapy, with ‘happily married ex-gay’ John Paulk on the cover. Paulk is now happily ex-ex-gay. Elijah and I wrote the update to that '98 cover story, on Paulk, other ex-ex-gays, and the gay conversion therapy movement’s last decade of crumbling. In the process, I read lots of narratives from people who left ex-gay ministries once they were able to confront the fact that their orientation hadn’t really changed. It’s all extremely painful stuff. One ex-ex-gay woman, Darlene Bogle, says she’s writing books now to counter the books she wrote while she was part of Exodus. She says it pains her that those old books are still out there somewhere, telling people they can change. “I’m trying to go back, to try to bring healing to those who believed my lie,” she says. “It’ll take the rest of my life. I’ll be 70 this year. I just hope God lets me live long enough to let me do it.”Read the story here. -- source link
