zespaceblog: Proxima C Astronomy isn’t always just about the newest telescopes, although clearly they are what catch our imagination. Astronomical data has been captured since we first looked up to the sky and began to note things down, and over the last 100 years, that has grown exponentially. More frequently, the gems are not being found in the latest Hubble images, but in the oldest of them. Hubble’s been collecting information now for around 30 years, so when Astronomer Fritz Benedict and research partner Barbara MacArthur turned to 25 years of Hubble data combined with more recent observations from SPHERE, they were able to confirm the presence of Proxima C, a small neptune 5 times the mass of Earth planet that circles every 1907 days. That now makes both Proxima B and C confirmed planets. Source : https://astronomynow.com/2020/06/03/second-proxima-centauri-planet-confirmed-in-25-year-old-hubble-data/ -- source link
