Heemskerk van Veen’s engraving imagining the Colossus of Rhodes, 16th century. The real colossus was built in the 280s BCE, likely with melted-down siege equipment. It was destroyed in an earthquake after 54 years. Though many depictions, including this one, show the statue standing over the entrance to the harbor, this was likely impossible – it was probably next to the entrance.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
