amuseoffyre:absynthe–minded:star-anise:thatlushscent:star-anise:beau–brummell:Lads…the Beau Brummell Twitter thread is happening all over again…When you produce a take so bad you retweet someone saying it’s trashCan someone explain why this is wrong? It makes sense without context. ♀️Pants have been a thing forever, like, for millennia. Ötzi, the prehistoric man from five thousand years ago, found in a cave in the Alps, was wearing leggings. Pants are the default outfit for a LOT of cultures, both horse cultures and not. I mean, in a lot of ways, Western men are the odd ones out for NOT wearing anything remotely close to a dress. Up until 500 years ago, it was pretty common to wear a long robe and then some sort of trouserlike garment under it; then European men got more and more fixated on showing off their sexxxy legs (slight overstatement but only slight) and making the entire fashion silhouette for the genders SUPER different. So like… the timescale’s off, the direction of the shift is off, the entire social dynamics of horses being symbols of wealth is so wrong it’s not even wrong… yeah, it’s all a mess.thank you thank you thank you. I didn’t have the energy to type all that upBarbarians were wearing trousers and appalling the Romans, ffs. Of course, then the Romans invaded Britain and went “Jupiter’s sake, it’s cold! MUM! Send me socks!” Likewise, when the Macedonians hit Persia, the Persians were holding up gentlemanly trousers and the Macedonians went “what kind of fopwear is this nonsense?”I always figured the fashion for the breech was moving on from the hose: instead of giant poofy bits at the top of the hose, things became more streamlined into the pantaloon trousers that ended just below the knee and the hose only appeared on the lower leg, because who doesn’t want to show a flash of well-turned calf? And then just kept getting longer until we get Fashionistas of the day with ankle-length trousers.A tragedy, in my eyes. Bring back a well-turned calf, for have the thirst for it. -- source link
