becomethesame:abednadirofficial:dekesshaw:By the way, when I cloned you, I had to patch some missing parts of your DNA with genes from a homecoming pigeon. You mai notice side effects, like a compulsion to come back.~incoming overanalysis~OK so look at everyone’s faces! first of all, in every hug/goodbye except the last, we are only really shown one faceAnnie: we get her face in the hug. she’s smiling. She’s gonna miss Troy, but is happy for him.Shirley: also get her face, which is similar to Annie’s. smile tinged with sadness. It’s very much a face that says “I love you, baby, take care of yourself.”Jeff: this gifset doesn’t show it, but in the pseudo-not-really-a-hug, we’re actually shown Troy’s face. He’s got his cute little half-smile going; this face says “Jeff Winger, you asshole, I’m gonna miss ya.”Britta: Troy’s face again. His face is, significantly, very similar to Annie’s. What’s the common denominator? “I used to be romantically into you but now we’re good friends. I’ll miss you, but I’m happy.”Abed: Time to bring it all home. First of all, I kept mentioning whose face was shown in each hug for a reason. They focused on the face of the person who would be most affected, in each pairing, by Troy’s departure. Whose face do they show in the Trobed hug? Oh right, both of them. Okay, so what else is different about this goodbye? Well, let’s see: what was the same about all of the others? Happiness! Right! Wait a minute, that’s not the case for this one. Oops. When Troy’s face is shown, we first get a sad smile similar to the one he gave Britta. After a couple seconds, it falls, and his eyes shift focus as well. From gazing off into the distance (a ‘man, think of all the memories’ look), Troy blinks, and looks down at the man who is very much not a memory. Abed is right there. At that moment. He is very much still real and present to Troy. Then, almost as if to confirm this, Troy tightens his hug: notice, in the last split second of the gif, he suddenly has a pained expression and squeezes a bit harder before letting go. Of course, the way Abed hugs is significant as well. Go back through every season of this show, every episode. Every time there is a Trobed hug, Troy initiates, and then Abed reciprocates (more often in more recent episodes- early in their relationship there wasn’t a lot of hugging back). Also notice the way Abed reacts to hugs from other people. He doesn’t. He may smile and accept the hug graciously, but there’s no reciprocation with anyone but Troy. For Abed, this hug is different from any that came before it. Look at their arms. Both move in at the same time. It’s mutual. Do you know what a big deal that is for Abed? Especially this version of Abed- an alternate persona he created to specifically have no emotions. Even clone!Abed treats Troy as special. Finally, Abed’s face. Happy at first: “Cool. Cool cool cool. Hugging Troy! I like hugging Troy.” His face fall is much more drastic than Troy’s. Within a second of the execution of the hug, his mouth falls into a straight up frown (not just the normal expressionless mouth that is standard for Abed) and his eyebrows furrow. This is an expression that says “Oh shit. This is the last time I’ll hug Troy.” He blinks, and his eyebrows return (almost) to their normal position. His mouth adjusts ever so slightly. To someone who didn’t know better, he would look like standard emotionless Abed. Not the case. It’s all in his eyes. This particular face is a perfect representation of the saddest Abed Nadir I have ever seen. Had their hug lasted a few seconds more, I have no doubt that Abed would be close to tears, as Troy already evidently is. In conclusion, Trobed. -- source link
