Let me be clear: before 1993, no working pregnant women or person was legally guaranteed ANY type of maternity leave. This changed for some workers when the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was passed by the Clinton administration. The FMLA while great, had specific stipulations about qualifications for maternity leave, which meant it only covered around 59 percent of the people who needed it. We should also talk about how FMLA only guarantees up to 12 weeks of UNPAID maternity leave, and if a company employs 50 people or less, they aren’t required to provide FMLA benefits AT ALL to their employees?? Right now, there are still no laws on the books in the United States that guarantee Americans PAID family (maternity or paternity!) leave.✨For many of us, this is incredibly frustrating. Some states have passed legislation to expand these benefits - In 2016, New York started to offer 8 weeks of maternity leave with 50% of pay, with the goal of reaching 12 weeks and 67% of pay in 2021 (Hint - it’s still not enough). ⚕️✨We need better policies for working parents. ❤️❤️❤️Art by Liberal Jane Illustration -- source link
