Magnus Hirschfeld (14 May 1868 – 14 May 1935) was an advocate for gay rights, women’s rights, and transgender rights in Germany, and established research that he believed would provide “justice through science.” Hirschfeld went on a speaking tour of the US in 1930, where he presented his theory that there was a wide spectrum of human sexuality, all of which were “natural.” He also foresaw he would need to leave Germany, as he was targeted by Nazis for being Jewish and gay. In 1933 (less than 4 months after Hitler took power), Hirschfeld’s institute was destroyed, and he fled to France on 14 May 1933, his 65th birthday. Hirschfeld died in France exactly 2 years later, from a heart attack. -- source link
