My friend came to Moscow recently for a visit and my bro and I dragged him to my cottage and there we had a Gargoyles marathon xdd. It didn’t look like it would happen, but then we got hit by XANATOS. Well, as usual, I was also struck, in parallel, by the Bible’s references. I can never get past it… So as soon as I started to realize the obvious “David and Goliath” thing, I wanted to use it in art. I thought it would be cool to make a reference to a painting from classical art - the subject is popular. I immediately thought of Caravaggio with all three of his variations, but I just couldn’t use it. Then I saw Jacob van Oost with his version and everything fell into its place. I love parallels of this kind, and Xanatos is very much like someone who would collect paintings. -- source link
