People talk about self-discovery but I think I’ve been in the process of self-deconstruction. At some point this year I realized that I was a person shaped by everyone else’s expectations of me, and it’s been a struggle to untangle my own will from others’, to find the voice that was mine and not an echo of somebody else. The whole thing has been painful, like breaking a bone to reset it correctly, and I understand why this is a reality I’ve spent all this time avoiding. I’m grateful to everyone who worked so hard to keep me alive this year and endured so much of my bullshit along the way.
