germanaustriannoblesandroyals:Women of German Principalities (1/?): Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld Today Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld is best known by her marital title of Duchess of Kent and remembered as mother of the famous Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland and fraternal aunt of her husband Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Not many are aware that Queen Victoria was actually the Princess’ third child. Before marrying Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn in 1818, she was married from 1803 until the death of her husband to Emich Carl, 2nd Prince of Leiningen. From this marriage resulted two children: Carl, 3rd Prince of Leinigen and Princess Feodora. After her husband’s death, Victoria acted as regent of Leiningen for her minor son from 1814 to 1818 when she married Prince Edward, The Duke of Kent and Strathearn. As an impoverished foreign member of the British Royal family, Victoria was unpopular with the British people and within the royal family itself. Her reliance on John Conroy after the death of her second husband did not help the fact either. In the end his controlling and abusive manor also tainted Victoria’s relationship to her youngest daughter who would only invite her back to court after the birth of her own firth child, Victoria, The Princess Royal. At the age of 74, The Duchess died at 09:30am on March 16th,1861 with her daughter Queen Victoria at her side. -- source link
