Is there any characteristic that fits better to describe this group? The German language calls vegetables »Gemüse«, it derives from the old Germanic word »muos« (food, victuals, porridge). Even Müsli has the same root. Sometimes Germans call their vegetables »green things« but only to show that they don’t appreciate this sort of food much.
