Fair Isle Knits from Mari Ventrillon Have you ever owned a traditional Fair Isle sweater from #Scotl
Fair Isle Knits from Mari Ventrillon Have you ever owned a traditional Fair Isle sweater from #Scotland? I bought one in Scotland about two hundred years ago, and that gorgeous wool jumper lasted until my dog chewed it up a few years back. Fair Isle (#OldNorse: Friðarey; #ScottishGaelic: Fara) is an island in #Shetland, in northern Scotland. #Norse settlers named it Fridarey - the island of peace - but this stepping stone in the sea was also vital in times of strife, when the Earls of Orkney and #viking warlords before them used it as a look-out post and for sending fire signals to and from Shetland. #FairIsle lies approximately halfway between mainland Shetland and #Orkney; it’s the most remote inhabited ( pop. 70) island in the UK. It is known for its bird observatory and a traditional style of knitting. You can still get beautiful handcrafted and bespoke Fair Isle knitwear from Fair Isle crafters. The photos of the traditional island kep,a knitted cap, and the jumper/sweater are from the Fair Isle Artisans collection at mativentrillon.co.uk. They aren’t cheap, but they are worth the cost for a Scottish treasure that will last for years. Unfortunately, the red haired Scottish-Viking model is unavailable at this time. You might want to consider a trip to Fair Isle to seek out a suitable alternative. #TraditonalScottishCrafts #HandKnit #ShetlandWool #mativentrillon #VikingsWhoWouldLookGoodInAKilt -- source link
