Now, the number of pairings doesn’t make a series great, its the story itself that makes it great. However, if a shipping war were to break out between Homestuck and Naruto, if we went by the number of possible ships, Naruto would win. By a LANDSLIDE. There is 840 Homestuck characters, not including alternate timeline versions of characters, and tricksters, and many others, and that is only listing the characters who have a full wiki page. Not including selfcest, there are an infinite amount of ships, because you can not only ship them in love, but in Homestuck, you can ship them in moiraillegiance, kismesitude, and auspisticeship, which is OT3s. Naruto may have 18 extra characters, but we have four seperate ways we can ship each ship! And for auspisticising, each three of the characters involved can play the part of the auspistice! Homestuck has infinite ways to ship, and sorry, but would beat Naruto.i ship homestuck <3< naruto nowI just thought I’d point this out… The number of ships the Naruto fandom claims to have is absurd and clearly a gross miscalculation. For the sake of my mind, we’re going to assume that in all cases the nature of consent and requisition does not play a factor in the ship, but rather if two characters are together in a certain kind of relationship then that is representative of that ship as a statistic. We are also going to exclude 3-ways, and only acknowledge P as a variable represented by a number other than 2 when concerning an Auspistic relationship. If we establish our variables to be {N = the number of characters in a fandom}, {P = the number of participants involved in a particular paring} and {S = the number of romantic ways to ship any characters}, then the formula for calculating the number of ships in a fandom ought to adhere to follows:((N^P) - N)*S if we chose not to include self-cest (which in this case we will given that Naruto and Homestuck are both prone to some form of duplication shenanigan or another) making our final equation (N^P)S(858^2)1 = 736,164 This number represents the total number of potential ships within the Naruto fandom where N = 858 and P = 2 and S = 1Now when we look at Homestuck, the numbers stack up differently because we have to account for all four of the romantic quadrants. Because The Auspistic quadrant will have a different P value than the other three quadrants, it will be calculated separately.(840^2)(Matespritship)+(840^2)(Moirailegance)+(840^2)(Kismesissitude)+((840^3)-(840*3))(Auspisticism) = 594,818,280This gives Homestuck just over half a billion potential ships where as Naruto doesn’t even reach one million. This doesn’t even begin to take into account ships involving quadrant vacillation which would more than quadruple the number of ships in the Homestuck fandom.Next time check your basic math before you post.ouchreblogging purely because this person went ahead and made a shipping equation and that is just awesomethis is the only math problem i will ever appreciate.NOW WHATWHERE IS YOUR GOD NOWHi guys. Tumblr user Stelera’s back with more Homestuck shipping math!Guess what guys? Hussie has introduced 9 new charms into the array of potential shipping possibilities! Because I like math, and I like shipping, and because my previous shipping equation still has some flaws, I’m going to clear things up and write a new equation to include the leprechaun romantic system as well. This means I’m going to step through a whole new Homestuck shipping equation!Let’s start by calculating the number of different charm possibilities, which we will use to calculate the number of different romantic systems. According to Aranea, any two individuals could engage in a relationship comprised of any combination of the 9 charms. For example, this means two characters could engage in a relationship that is only Clovers, or perhaps Clovers and Rainbows, or even Clovers, Rainbows, and Pots of Gold. You see where this is going? First we must take into account three different factors:1: Having no charms does not count as a relationship.2: Order does not matter (Clovers and Rainbows is the same as Rainbows and Clovers)3: Repetition of charms is not allowed (Clovers and Clovers is not a relationship)In its general form, this equation would be (2^C)-1 where C is the total number of charms. We subtract 1 because as stated above, having no charms is not considered a relationship. This gives us a total number of possible charm combinations of (2^9)-1 = 511 possible charm combinations. If you further take into account Aranea’s explanation that the hearts in leprechaun charms is the same as troll matespritship which is the same as human love, while kismesissitude, moirallegiance, and auspisticism have no human or leprechaun analogue, we end up with a total of 513 potential two-party relationship types, and auspisticism (which will be calculated separately as it is a three-party relationship type). We’ll start off with a basic equation for the number of potential two-party ships. In order to find all possible pairs, we use the combination equation N!/((N-M)!*2) where N is the number of characters in Homestuck, and M is the number of characters per ship. For this equation, however, we can always assume that M is 2 because we’re looking at only two-party ships. Now this equation does not deal with a character being shipped with themselves, and knowing the Homestuck fandom and all of Homestuck’s time-shenanigans, we want to include the case of characters being shipped with themselves, so we will add N to the equation. Finally we need to multiply this equation by the total number of two-party relationship types, 513, finalizing this part of the equation as:513((N!((N-2)!*2))+N) again where N is the number of characters in Homestuck. Now we will calculate the number of potential ashen ships. Similar to with two-party ships, we have to account for shipping characters with themselves with auspisticism, but it is not practical to have one character auspisticise two versions of themselves, so for this case we will consider that order of characters only matters with regards to the position of the character acting as the actual auspistice. To give you an example, we can combine characters A, B, and C in the following ways:BAB, BAC, CAC, ABA, ABC, CBC, ACB, ACA, BCBIn this model only the order of the first and last character can be ignored, while the position of the second character must be as is. To simplify: ABC = CBA but ABC ≠ CAB. Taking these factors into account, we can write the equation for potential ashen ships as follows:N*N*(N-1)/2 which simplifies down to ((N^2)(N-1))/2 again where N is the number of characters in Homestuck.Combining the two equations is very simple; we only need to add them.(513((N!((N-2)!*2))+N)) + (((N^2)(N-1))/2)Now I’ve left this in general form for several reasons. Primarily I’ve received mixed signals as to how many characters there are in Homestuck, but also because that number is ever growing. According to the Wikipedia page on Homestuck, there are 128 characters, while the Homestuck Wiki used to state that there were 134 characters (that number is no longer displayed on the “Characters” page, and that number existed before the introduction of Cherubmom, Cherubdad, Mierfa Durgas, and Nektan Whelan, which would have pushed that number up to 138. For the sake of convenience I will go ahead and calculate all three possibilities, and you can chose whichever number you think is prettiest.N = 128 (According to Wikipedia)513((128!/((128-2)!*2))+128)+(((128^2)(128-1))/2) = 5,275,712N = 134 (Last known value according to Homestuck Wiki)513((134!/((134-2)!*2))+134)+(((134^2)(134-1))/2) = 5,834,159N = 138 (Projected value based on last known value according to Homestuck Wiki)513((138!/((138-2)!*2))+138)+(((138^2)(138-1))/2) = 6,224,697Happy Gigapause, everyone!(Originally posted by me a while ago here) -- source link
